José Bernabe Campechano

The Bernabe family has been producing ceramic items for more than 200 years. More than 40 years ago they began to specialize in the demanding technique of the “petatillo”. Nowadays their masterpieces are representing a unique synthesis of tradition and innovation. Don José uses white, black and beige-coloured and red clay and very special ceramic glazes, some of which he is making himself. Preparing the “petatillo” the blank pieces get a bath of red clay from inside and outside. This is the basis to engrave the decoration with a special gouge. In combination with white glaze the netlike pattern is created, which is associated with the structure of the “petate” – the Mexican sleeping mat made from weaved reed. After that the pieces are baked at about 800° C. and then, José Bernabe Campechano
after having a bath in a ceramic glaze, they are baked a second time at about 1000° C. , giving the surface its specific and charateristic shine. In case of more simple pieces they are baked only once with the same result, thanks to lead-free glazes.
That´s how unique jugs, vases or plates are made, which are mostly showing combinations of black, red and white colours, and recently also blue and green shades. Altogether, only the painting of a bigger piece may take a week´s time. So the whole process from preparing the clay to the finished product may last up to two weeks.

Those “petatillo”-ceramics are a very special rarity. They are already now collected by a fan-community in the USA.
Many prices and awards are giving evidence for the high artistic level of José Bernabe´s unique craftsmanship. He is the best example for the high standard of Mexican ceramic art. In order to maintain this standard in the future, he is also supporting the promotion of Mexican craftsmanship on a political level.
Already in 1964 he was honoured with the “Premio Jalisco”, the most important and most desired award for artists in the state of Jalisco. His pride and joy, however, is a letter of thanks for a gift in “petatillo”-style, sent from pope John Paul II. with his apostolic benediction.
In the meantime, you can find José Bernabe´s works of art in museums of Japan, the USA and Europe.
On March, 16th 2007 Don José had his 70th birthday.

Felicitaciones, salud y tenga suerte, maestro!
