Carpets and tapestry from Mexico

Carpets and tapestry from Teotitlán del valle
Teotitlán del valle is situated in the south of the city of Oaxaca. Most of the about 4ooo inhabitants are making their living with the weaving of carpets. They are using zapotec and modern patterns or they are following the ideas of their clients. Some of these carpets can already be found in museums, such as tapestry from Isaac Vásquez , which already have the status of art. The high competition between the weavers of Teotitlán is the reason why all of them are working on a high level of quality.

In Oaxaca, weaving has been practised from time immemorial. When the Spaniards invaded , there were about 500.000 Zapotecs living in this area. They had to pay tribute to the Spaniards which was woven cotton cloth.

After the Spaniards had brought the first sheep to Mexico, also wool with natural dyes from plants, mussels and cochinilla was used for weaving.

In the last century, they also used chemical inks, but nowadays only natural dyes are taken, led by Isaac Vásquez, who was the first to eliminate chemical dyes.
Intensity and brightness of these colours are amazing and they are waterproof - test it with a moist piece of cloth or paper!

The essentials for a carpet of high quality are:

-the length of the wool

-careful carding and dying of the wool by hand

-purity and brightness of the dyes

-even spinning of the threads

-the tightness of the threads

The quality of weaving is mainly determined by

-strength and tightness of the woven material (not less than 10 threads per inch)

-refinement of the pattern and

-number of details

The subjects of the patterns are identical on both sides of the carpet (kelim), because the weft thread is led back.
