Alebrijes are phantasy-products, mostly based on an animal model. They were created in Mexico City appr. in 1930 and often combine elements of different genus in a countless variety of phantastic and colourful figures. Nowadays the best and most famous alebrijes are carved from copal wood in a small town in the south of Oaxaca, called San Martin. We have chosen a
selection of some fine samples made by Efrain Fuentes who is living in San Martin with his wife Silvia and four little children. Especially Silvia is painting the finest and most creative decorations, you can imagine. Efrain began carving copal wood already at the age of seven and now already has a reputation for being one of the best of his guild. He a unique artist in the stylization of animals, giving them a very individual characteristic appearance and design. Silvia is doing the most fanciful and exceptional fine painting you can imagine. Each one you see here is a unique piece!
