Paquimé is an arqueologic zone about 350 km northeast of Chihuahua. The culture of the Paquimé began around 7oo B.C. and had a wide range of influence, including Sonora, Arizona, Utah Colorado and New Mexico. Their speciality was the construction of houses from a special mixture of clay with
entrances in the shape of a "T". (As they had up to 4 floors, the Spaniards later called this place "Casas Grandes".) In 1340 B.C. this place was conquered by enemies and the culture of the Paquimé vanished. The decoration of their ceramics , however, was so unique and special, that last century Juan Quesada from Mata Ortíz was inspired to create new products, based on the Paquimé culture. They are unique in their very fine decoration, partially painted with brushes from human hair. Nowadays, there are about 5oo potters in and around Mata Ortíz, making beautiful ceramic vases of a very high quality, coming close to porcelain. We have chosen for you some unique pieces.
